How to do a Probe sheet

How to do a probe with your child
Your child will soon be bringing home their reading homework. This will consist of a reading book with designated pages to read. This will help your child to develop their reading in context skills. If you would like to do additional reading your child should also be receiving a library book soon.

Your child will also bring home a reading probe. This is used to practice reading a particular sound in isolation following on from testing. The aim of this is to use repetition and overlearning in order to help pupils develop automaticity of reading sounds.
Sit with your child and ask them to read through the words provided (you can help them to recognise them when they are first starting). Aim to read all of the words on the sheet to promote fluency.
The video below shows an example of a child reading a probe.
