Welcome to Foxes
Welcome to Foxes! We are a class of 12 Year 6 pupils who enjoy learning through curiosity, creativity and challenge. Our classroom is a welcoming and supportive environment where every pupil is encouraged to become an independent learner, celebrate their achievements and develop the confidence to take on new experiences.
Our class team consists of Mr Ferris-Rice, Miss Albertsen, Miss Delamare (Monday to Thursday), Mrs Fleming (Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and all day Thursday) and Mrs Duggan (Fridays). Together we will work closely to ensure every child feels valued, supported and inspired to achieve their personal best.
Phonics and Reading
Reading will continue to be at the heart of everything we do in Foxes. Pupils will take part in daily reading opportunities and receive phonics teaching that is carefully matched to their individual stage of learning. Through small-group teaching and targeted support, we will continue to develop decoding, fluency and comprehension, whilst fostering a genuine love of reading. Our aim is for every child to become a confident reader who can enjoy books and use reading as a tool for lifelong learning.
English
In Foxes, we will explore a range of high-quality books and use them as inspiration for our own writing. Throughout the year we will follow the Adventurers English Long Term Plan, immersing ourselves in exciting texts that inspire stories, poetry and non-fiction writing.
Children will develop their writing through our Reading to Writing Journey, learning how to analyse texts, plan carefully, draft confidently and improve their work through revising and editing before publishing. Alongside this, pupils will continue to develop their grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and handwriting, helping them become increasingly confident and independent writers.
Maths
Maths in Foxes will follow the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing pupils to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts before applying them independently. Children will begin by exploring ideas using practical resources and concrete equipment before representing their understanding through pictures and diagrams, and finally applying their learning using abstract methods and written calculations.
Throughout the year, pupils will be encouraged to explain their thinking, use mathematical vocabulary with confidence and apply their understanding to increasingly challenging problem-solving and reasoning activities. Our aim is to build resilient mathematicians who are confident in selecting strategies, justifying their answers and applying their skills in a range of real-life contexts.
Our Dimensions Curriculum
Our Dimensions topics will provide exciting opportunities to learn across history, geography, science, art, computing and design technology.
This year we will travel back in time to compare life in Athens v Sparta, discovering how Ancient Greece has shaped the modern world. We will celebrate diversity and develop our understanding of different beliefs and cultures through A World of Difference. During Picture Our Planet, we will explore the contrasting environments of Brazil, Scotland and Fiji, developing our geographical knowledge and understanding of our changing world. Finally, That's All Folks will allow pupils to explore animation, storytelling and the world of media through a range of exciting creative projects.
Each topic will be brought to life through practical learning experiences, educational visits where possible and purposeful outcomes that make learning memorable.
Life Skills
Preparing pupils for adulthood is an important part of life in Foxes. Through our Life Skills curriculum, children will develop practical skills that promote independence, including cooking, budgeting, organisation, personal safety, healthy living and making informed choices. We will encourage pupils to become confident, responsible and increasingly independent in both school and everyday life.
Social Skills
Positive relationships are at the centre of our classroom. Through our Social Skills programme, pupils will develop the skills needed to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, solve problems, recognise and manage emotions, and show empathy towards others. These skills will be embedded throughout the school day, helping our pupils grow into kind, respectful and confident young people who are well prepared for life beyond Orrets Meadow.
