September 2013 we opened our ASD classrooms for pupils in KS2. Each has access to our sensory room, toilets and changing/shower facilities. In September 2014 we opened up our KS1 ASD classroom, complete with outdoor classroom provision, sensory room, toilet and changing facilities.
The leader of the ASD classes is Mrs Wright. The team she manages consists of Mr McAteer, Miss MacGregor, Mrs Gordon, Mrs Jones, Mrs Nicholls, Mrs Maddox, Mrs Forshaw, Mrs Wynne and Mrs Ward. There are three classes, one for Key Stage 1, one for lower Key Stage 2 and the other for Upper Key Stage 2. For children to attend our classes they must have a Education Health Care PLan or Statement and a diagnosis of ASC or Social Communication Difficulties. All children at Orrets Meadow also have SpLD. Other additional needs may also be present. These classes have up to 8 pupils, a teacher and 2 Teaching Assistants.
Every morning identified children access a personalised sensory diet through our sensory circuit. There are a range of activities to either boost their energies or calm them down to ensure they are ready to learn. A sensory workshop was held for parents to find out more information on sensory processing. Slides from the workshop can be found under the parents' tab.
Through Pupil Premium funding we have been able to obtain a Speech and Language therapist to come into school 1.5 days a week. Helen works with children who have speech difficulties and language/social difficulties. She also holds appointments with parents and leads inset with our staff.
